This paper provides a context for the use of inclusions in glass objects (with an emphasis on the use of metal inclusions) in art and in industry. This includes: definitions of key concepts; the short history of inclusions in glass, their aesthetic function in craft, art and design; how contemporary artists combine glass with other materials, predominantly with metals; techniques of metal applications with or in glass developed by contemporary practitioners; relevant development of technologies used by scientists; and finally, industrial applications of metals in glass. This overview also identifies problems within the field. Furthermore the paper introduces a short description of the author’s practice-based research and the developed pioneering methods of applications of printing inclusions, 3D collages and metal inclusions in glass objects.
